Artist Aquil Virani paints CelebrateHer portrait of Naomi Tatty (Iqaluit, NU)

Naomi is a strong Inuk woman who tells it how it is.

She works in community health outreach for the Department of Public Health in Nunavut. After being nominated by a friend for a feminist portrait series called CelebrateHer, Naomi had to cancel her trip to Ottawa where I was scheduled to meet her (due to family health reasons). Instead, we connected remotely and I provided specific instructions to an Iqaluit-based photographer to capture several reference photos for the acrylic and spray-painted portrait.

Chatting over the phone for the first time with a 3-second time delay between us proved to be a wonderful exercise in both patience and trust.
