1. Hello, MSL2115.
Thank you for having me.
2. Some projects:
— “Our Immigrant Stories” (2021-2022)
— “Canada’s Self Portrait” (2015)
— “50 Years of Migration” (2023)
— “Unpacking” (2022-2025)
3. Ten ” provocations”
1. We sometimes assume that visitors know what we know.
2. “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito”
— His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
3. Culture is always richer with more perspectives included.
4. Nationality is messy. (If I have a passport, am I a colonizer?)
5. The world is a complex kaleidoscope of surprises and contradictions. (We are multitudes.)
6. Inclusion can be passive or active.
7. Don’t forget a “class analysis” (of immigration, art, etc.).
8. Monoliths are rare. (But we don’t know what we don’t know.)
9. Some institutions sidestep the “immigration helps our economy” argument to avoid that framing.
10. Some communities – especially “model minorities” – see institutional recognition as a validation of their belonging.
11. An important question: How does this change the material lives of people we want to help?
Now: Open discussion / any questions?
